Bone pushed open Gallacher’s door with such force it that it smashed against the adjacent wall. He was about to launch into an accusatory rage when he spotted a smart-suited woman sitting in a chair by the DSU’s desk.

Gallacher looked up in surprise and cut Bone off before he could even start. “DCI Bone, this is Special Investigator Tennyson,” he said sternly. “She’s from Edinburgh Central.”

Bone glanced over at Tennyson, who stood up and gave him a curt nod.

“Tennyson? Really?”

“I’m afraid so. Sarah Tennyson. My colleagues call me Saint Mirren,” she replied.

Bone eyeballed the tall stranger with the styled crew cut who matched his gaze more than equally. “To what do we owe the pleasure of a visit from Internal?” he asked, his hackles still up.

“Sit down, DCI Bone,” Gallacher said. Bone slowly lowered himself onto the chair opposite, his brain primed for wherever this was heading.

“As a special investigator for PIRC, I have been ordered by the Procurator Fiscal to investigate a complaint that has been made,” Tennyson began.

Bone detected the purring twang of a Morningside accent. Public School, he thought. The upturned blouse collar peeking above her suit jacket was conclusive evidence of probable privilege, to him anyway. “A complaint about what?” he snapped.

She reached into her bag and removed an envelope. “I have been ordered to serve you with a conduct notice,” she said, her lip curling around the hint of a smile.

“What?” Bone raged. “What for?”

“As I said, a complaint has been made and we are following standard procedure, DCI Bone,” Tennyson continued.

“Let me guess who’s complained?” Bone said, rolling his eyes.

“We are not at liberty to share that information.”

“Well, it wouldn’t take a police detective to work it out. I take it that’s why you’ve been sniffing around in my personal records?” Bone shot his boss a withering look.

“We have concerns about your handling of the case, DCI Bone.” Tennyson cut back in before Gallacher could reply.

“I thought we were talking about a specific complaint?” Bone replied, adding, “and I think you’ll find that’s ‘sir’, Special Investigator Tennyson.”

“You have recently returned to work, following a period of sick leave, is that correct?”

“So this is an interrogation now?” Bone fired back.

“DCI Bone. The SI is here to ensure that the current investigation proceeds quickly without any unnecessary change of leadership,” Gallacher finally piped up.

His attempt at reassurance was lost on Bone. “The investigation is proceeding and will continue to proceed if you stop wasting my time here,” the DCI snarled.

“I will need to interview you and your team, but I have no intention of obstructing the investigation,” Tennyson said.

“My investigation,” Bone replied. “We’re all kind of busy trying to catch a cop killer, in case you hadn’t noticed.”

“I’m afraid you have no choice but to cooperate with me. When investigating a matter directed by the Crown and Procurator Fiscal Service, I have the power to interview, question, detain, arrest and report for prosecution,” Tennyson persisted.

“Farce.” Bone stood up.

“Sit down, DCI Bone,” Gallacher barked. Then he turned to Tennyson.
